Its primary mandate is to protect and promote public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. FSSAI is instrumental in setting standards for food articles, laying down hygienic conditions for food operations, and regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food. Its functions include developing standards for food products, issuing licenses and certifications for food businesses, conducting surveillance activities, and ensuring compliance through enforcement actions.
