About National Commission for Scheduled Castes

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) is a constitutional body in India established under Article 338 of the Constitution of India. It plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the rights and interests of the Scheduled Castes community across the nation. Formed initially as a multi-member commission in 1990 and subsequently separated from the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes in 2004, the NCSC is headquartered in New Delhi and operates with a clear mandate to ensure the welfare and development of Scheduled Castes. The primary mandate of the NCSC involves investigating and monitoring all matters relating to the safeguards provided for the Scheduled Castes under the Constitution or any other law. It inquires into specific complaints regarding the deprivation of rights and safeguards, participates and advises on the planning process of socio-economic development of the Scheduled Castes, and evaluates the progress of their development.
