The National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) , formerly known as the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped (NIMH), stands as a premier autonomous organization under the administrative control of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India. Established in 1984, NIEPID is dedicated to developing human resources, conducting research, providing rehabilitation services, and promoting the rights and empowerment of persons with intellectual disabilities across India. NIEPID's core mandate encompasses a wide range of activities aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This includes developing and standardizing training packages for professionals, parents, and caregivers; conducting pioneering research into various aspects of intellectual disability; offering comprehensive rehabilitation services such as early intervention, special education, vocational training, and therapeutic support; and advocating for inclusive policies and programs.
