UPSC CDS Exam (II) 2022 Notification Out – The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has issued the notification for the Combined Defence Services Examination (II) 2022. The UPSC CDS Examination is conducted twice a year. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective Academies after an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB). Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for the exam. UPSC CDS Exam (II) 2022 will be held on 04th September 2022. So, candidates planning to take the exam should fill out the application form before the last date and start preparing for the exam according to the exam pattern and syllabus.

The Combined Defence Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for the recruitment of Commissioned Officers in the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy. The Notification for the examination is usually released in the months of October and June, and the examinations are conducted in February and November respectively.

Stage-I: Written Exam

The subjects of the written examination, the maximum marks allotted to each subject/ paper, and the time allowed shall be as follows:-

The papers in all the subjects will consist of objective type questions only. The question papers (Test Booklets) of General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as English.

Stage-II: Intelligence & Personality Test

The SSB procedure consists of a two-stage Selection process – stage I and stage II. Only those candidates who clear stage I are permitted to appear for stage II. The details are:-

(a) Stage I comprises of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on the combination of performance in the OIR Test and PP&DT.

(b) Stage II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests, and the Conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days.

The personality of a candidate is assessed by three different assessors viz. The Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO), and the Psychologist. There is no separate weightage for each test. The marks are allotted by assessors only after taking into consideration the performance of the candidate holistically in all the tests. In addition, marks for Conference are also allotted based on the initial performance of the Candidate in the three techniques and the decision of the Board. All these have equal weightage.

The various tests of IO, GTO, and Psych are designed to bring out the presence/ absence of Officer Like Qualities and their trainability in a candidate. Accordingly, candidates are Recommended or Not Recommended at the SSB.

Candidates who wish to apply for UPSC CDS Examination should ensure that they fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria. 12th pass candidates can apply for this exam. Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply for this examination.

The standard of the papers in Elementary Mathematics will be of Matriculation level. The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be such as may be expected of a graduate of an Indian University. Here we have mentioned the detailed CDS Exam syllabus:-

Elementary Mathematics (Code No. 03)
  • Arithmetic:-
    i) Number System- Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers. Fundamental operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, Square roots, and Decimal fractions. Unitary method, time and distance, time and work, percentages, applications to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation.
    ii) Elementary Number Theory-
    Division algorithm.
    Prime and composite numbers.
    Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 11.
    Multiples and factors.
    Factorisation Theorem. H.C.F. and L.C.M.
    Euclidean algorithm.
    Logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables.
  • Algebra:-
    Basic Operations, simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M., Theory of polynomials, solutions of quadratic equations, the relation between its roots and coefficients (Only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns- analytical and graphical solutions. Simultaneous linear inequations in two variables and their solutions. Practical problems lead to two simultaneous linear equations or inequations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable & their solutions. Set language and set notation, Rational expressions and conditional identities, Laws of indices.
  • Trigonometry:-
    i) Sine x, cosine x, Tangent x when 0° <x<90° Values of sin x, cos x and tan x, for x = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° Simple trigonometric identities.
    ii) Use of trigonometric tables.
    iii) Simple cases of heights and distances.
  • Geometry:- Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures, Theorems on:
    (i) Properties of angles at a point
    (ii) Parallel lines
    (iii) Sides and angles of a triangle
    (iv) Congruency of triangles
    (v) Similar triangles
    (vi) The concurrence of medians and altitudes
    (vii) Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square
    (viii) Circles and their properties including tangents and normals
    (ix) Loci.
  • Mensuration:-
    Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangles and circles. Areas of figures can be split up into these figures (Field Book), Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders, and surface area and volume of spheres.
  • Statistics:-
    Collection and tabulation of statistical data, Graphical representation frequency polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts etc. Measures of central tendency.
